Nestled in the quaint town of Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, Pepes Egg Harbor City is a culinary treasure that brings the vibrant flavors of Spanish, Mexican, and Latin American cuisine to life. Located at 201 Cincinnati Ave A, this unassuming gem serves as a gathering spot for locals who appreciate hearty, homemade dishes steeped in tradition and flavor.

The atmosphere at Pepes is as warm as the welcome you'll receive from the staff. Regulars rave about the friendly service, with many expressing how the team knows their orders by heart. One customer notes, “The nicest people in the world even know what I want when I come in and it is usually three times a week,” showcasing the personal touch that sets Pepes apart from other dining options.

The menu bursts with options that cater to every craving, from the iconic spicy chicken empanadas—a frequent favorite among patrons—to the succulent steak and onions with yellow rice and fried chicken. The portions are generous, ensuring that diners leave satisfied and often with enough leftovers for future meals, as exemplified by another happy customer who recounted a spread for four adults costing less than $40.

Renovations have given Pepes a fresh, inviting look, inviting diners to linger and enjoy their meals in comfort. Enthusiasts appreciate the authenticity of the food, with one diner noting the taste is reminiscent of homemade favorites with proper seasoning that delights the palate. Some highlights include:

  • Succulent Stewed Chicken: Paired perfectly with Spanish rice and beans, its flavor profile is an undeniable hit.
  • Baked Chicken: A staple that satisfied even the pickiest of palates, with a side of sweet plantains adding a delightful contrast.
  • Empanadas: With a variety of fillings including beef, pork, and cheesesteak, these handheld delights are ideal for a quick snack or a light lunch.

However, it's important to note, as some diners mention, that while the offerings are predominantly comfort food, there is a noticeable lack of vegetable dishes on the menu. This may deter those seeking a balanced meal, but the overwhelming flavor and value continue to draw crowds. As one customer put it, Pepes is “a must-try" that lives up to its reputation.

this truly is a hidden gem, i've been coming here for years and i always leave satisfied. the owner is super personable and they recently did some renovations so the place looks nice! the spicy chicken empanadas are the way to go if you're looking for a quick treat, the only reason this place isn't receding five stars is because they could be a little more consistent with the tenderness of the chicken but nonetheless this spot is a must try!

Love this place. Food is always great. Everyone here is friendly and nice. If you don't see it ask. If they have it they will cook it fresh for you. Portions are large and prices are fair. We always get about 3-4 meals out of every order. We ordered Steak and Peppers, rice with gandules, baked chicken, sweet plantains, side of pinto beans and sauce, 3 chicken and cheese empanadas and 2 steak and cheese empanadas. 4 adults ate from all of this plus had enough leftovers for 4 more meals. All of this for less then $40. Fresh and homemade. Check out the pics....

Food was absolutely delicious. Homemade taste. I got the stewed chicken with Spanish rice and beans as well as the pepper steak. Seasoning was on point. Big portions and very friendly service. Will definitely come back to try more food!

Very pleasant staff and very helpful. Authentic Puerto Rican, Spanish food. Hard to find in the area. High in carbohydrates not the healthiest.... not to mention deep fried. Saying all this ... I will return. My biggest hesitation in recommending this restaurant is the lack of vegetables. Some of us eat vegetables.

I've been to Pepe's a bunch of times in the last few months and it's been my go to secret lunch spot when I'm blowing through the Whitehorse Pk. corridor of EHC. I say secret because it's a small unassuming location a few blocks off the pike on Cincinnati Ave. I was tipped off by my mother in law about the place. She's on the other side of EHC but gets take out regularly. The daily selection of empanadas is consistent. Those being spicy chicken, chicken, chicken w/ cheese, beef, pork, pizza (?) and cheesesteak. The spicy chicken is very good and the size is about the size of an 8" tortilla folded over. The rice & beans are also a solid must order. It's places like this that are the gems of the neighborhood in EHC. I hope to see the day when Philadelphia Ave. can be developed and EHC finally gets it's act together. Talk is cheap EHC..!..Make it happen. You must have Main St. envy with the success of Hammonton's revitalization. Until then....it's off the beaten path to Pepe's I go!
